- Greeting Guests: The primary role of a hostess is to warmly greet guests as they arrive at the establishment. A friendly and professional demeanor is essential to make guests feel welcome and comfortable.
- Seating Guests: Hostesses are responsible for managing reservations and walk-in guests. They must efficiently allocate tables, taking into consideration the size of the party, server availability, and guest preferences.
- Taking Reservations: In establishments that accept reservations, hostesses answer phone calls or emails, record reservation details, and confirm reservations. They need to keep an organized reservation book or electronic system.
- Maintaining Waitlists: When the restaurant is busy and all tables are occupied, hostesses maintain a waitlist for guests. They estimate wait times and keep guests informed about their status.
- Managing Special Requests: Guests often have special requests or requirements, such as dietary restrictions, seating preferences, or special occasions like birthdays. Hostesses should accommodate these requests to the best of their ability.
- Providing Menus: Hostesses distribute menus to guests and, if necessary, explain any specials or menu items. They may also inform guests of any promotions or events happening at the establishment.
- Coordinating with Servers: Hostesses communicate with servers and the kitchen to ensure a smooth flow of service. They provide servers with information about the seating plan, any special requests, and when to expect the arrival of guests at their tables.
- Maintaining the Hostess Stand: The hostess stand is the central point of communication in many establishments. Hostesses keep it organized, ensuring it is stocked with menus, reservation books, and other necessary materials.
- Handling Guest Inquiries: Guests may have questions or concerns, and it’s the hostess’s responsibility to address them or direct guests to the appropriate staff members.
- Assisting with Coat Check: In some upscale restaurants or venues, hostesses may oversee a coat check area, taking guests’ coats and providing claim tickets.
- Collecting Feedback: Hostesses often play a role in collecting feedback from guests, either informally or through comment cards. This feedback can be valuable for improving the guest experience.
- Adhering to Safety Protocols: Especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic or other health concerns, hostesses may be responsible for enforcing safety protocols such as mask-wearing, social distancing, and sanitization.
